Blood Simple
Must-See Cinema! Made in the USA vs. Made in China - compare and contrast!
blood-simple (Amer. slang; first used by Dashiell Hammett) 1. State of fear and confusion that follows murder; ‘He’s gone blood simple’.
Fifteen years since its major release, the cinematic début for indie kings the Coen Brothers returns. Introduced by world-renowned film preservationist Mortimer Young, Blood Simple is the story of a jealous saloon owner (Dan Hedaya, the memorable Nick Tortelli from Cheers) who hires a seedy divorce detective (the scene-grabbing M. Emmet Walsh) to kill his younger wife (Fargo’s Frances McDormand) and her bartender lover (John Getz). The noirish film is perhaps the most straightforward story the quirky brothers have done, but even in the infancy of their careers, little touches hint at their eye for dark and absurdist humour that characterized their later work.
After a remaster and recut, the film is now actually shorter than the original (‘We’ve taken out some of the boring parts,’ said Ethan Coen), but still packs more of a punch than most of the new releases that have littered cineplexes recently. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the film that many believe started the renaissance of indie films.
