Coco avant Chanel adapts Edmonde Charles-Roux’s biography and stars Audrey Tautou as legendary Parisian couturier Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. Watching Coco being abandoned at an orphanage by her father, spending years mending hems in bleak dressmakers’ shops and shacking up in châteaux, anyone in the audience with a Vogue subscription will wonder, ‘Are we in Paris yet?’
The story gets there eventually, and director Fontaine does a good job of working that sense of anxiety and anticipation, quickly editing in detail shots – a nun’s black-and-white habit, a striped fisherman’s crewneck – that hint at the Chanel design vernacular to come. She also elicits a strong performance from Tautou, who’s simultaneously insolent, endearing and painfully chic in her tailored tweeds and little black dresses, surrounded by a supporting cast of corseted cleavage and clumsy hats.

The ByTowne doesn't have a parking lot of its own, but denizens of downtown can usually find street parking close by fairly easily.
If you're not keen to troll for a parking space, or if you're running late, we recommend the parking garage at Loblaws. It's covered, heated and safe – and just half a block from the cinema. The best part: they charge just $2 flat rate after 6pm on weekdays, and only $3 all day on Saturdays & Sundays.

This web site is very useful, but the hard copy of the ByTowne guide still has its merits. People rely on it and love it. Plus, its calendar pages can be pulled out and posted on your fridge door, something that we still can't achieve with the web site.
