Poster art (UK) for Monty Python's Life Of BrianMonty Python’s astringently funny masterpiece! With their customary verbal precision, the famed British sextet found prickly real-world humour in the circumstances that give rise to fanaticism, and gave us a host of memorable biblical oddballs: a Jesus-cured leper miffed about the loss of his begging career; a centurion who’s a stickler for proper Latin in a rebel’s anti-Roman graffiti; and a band of rabid followers arguing over the divine symbolism of a sandal in the dirt. Director Terry Jones even manages an almost documentary-style look at everyday Jerusalem life to keep the movie’s points grounded in comic truth rather than Scripture.

Ironically enough, despite the controversy sparked by the film’s first release, the Pythons leave Jesus alone and aim straight for blind zealots, who, in their scenario, rashly declare Graham Chapman’s title character – a Jewish mama’s boy with insurrectionist leanings – the Messiah. After all these years, the pungency of this satire about the perils of mass miscommunication hasn’t dissipated. In the Pythons’ view, all of us are mere words away from being entertained as a prophet but, conversely, not that far from crucifixion, either.
