Rebecca

Must-See Cinema! Amazingly, Hitchcock's only Oscar winner!

Poster art for RebeccaAmazingly Hitchcock’s only film to win an Academy Award (Best Film and Cinematography), Rebecca is a gripping thriller in the Gothic tradition.

The heroine, a shy young woman (Fontaine), falls in love with a rich, dashing gentleman (Olivier). In what seems to be a dream come true, he marries her and carries her off to the obligatory mansion – complete with spooky housekeeper – where her dream quickly turns sour.

From the beginning, she is tormented by the lingering loyalties, memories and mysteries surrounding her husband’s late wife. It’s a deadly shadow that threatens to consume her – but is the shadow real, or is it a reflection of her own paranoia?

One of the most fascinating elements of the film is the heroine’s character development, in the face of our doubts that she is strong enough to seek out and confront the truth about her predecessor, and about her new husband. Excellent acting brings to life the moody novel by Daphne du Maurier from which this elegant David Selznick production was derived. It’s a perfect vehicle for Hitchcock’s macabre artistry.
