To Catch A Thief

Must-See Cinema! The Riviera! Jewels! Cary! Grace!

Stylish and witty, with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in an elegant duel of wits on the Riviera, To Catch A Thief defines divertissement.

A tanned, foxy Grant plays a famous cat burglar who has retired to the Côte d’Azur to tend his vineyards. When a series of robberies bearing his trademark techniques brings the French flics to his door, Grant goes on the lam so he can discover who is imitating him. But is his pursuit of the copycat all a self-serving show?

When he takes up with an alluring American tourist (Grace Kelly) whose mother (Jessie Royce Landis) has her jewels stolen, the reformed burglar seems indeed to be up to his old ways.

Landis, Grant’s hilariously disbelieving mama in North By Northwest, has a high old time as the raucous matriarch, but it is the flirtatious cat-and-mouse game between Grant and Kelly that provides the silky suspense and, quite literally, the fireworks. The sexual innuendo is hardly subtle – Kelly famously puns on the parts of a roast chicken on a picnic, and those fireworks are brazenly orgasmic – but the tone is of blithe sophistication.
