A cultural snapshot of turn-of-the-millennium Toronto with subtle comic energy and a great cast, Sook-Yin Lee’s adaptation of Chester Brown’s autobiographical 2011 graphic novel is a movie only Lee could make… because it’s her story, too.
Filmmaker and musician Sook-Yin Lee and cartoonist Chester Brown were in a romantic relationship in the 1990s. When Lee ended the relationship, Brown decided to hire sex workers instead of looking for a new girlfriend. He shared this experience in his graphic novel. Now, Lee is directing and co-writing the adaptation, bringing the story full circle.
Daniel Beirne (“I Like Movies”) plays Chester. He enjoys having sexual relationships without emotional ties, but he feels confused when people ask if he knows what he’s doing. Emily Lê (“Riceboy Sleeps”) plays Lee’s alter ego, Sonny. Sonny follows her open heart into new opportunities and hopes Chester will support her as she navigates the changing dynamics of their relationship.
