Antiviral

What if you could feel like they do...

Poster art for AntiviralSet in an alternate world where fans can achieve ‘biological communion’ with their favourite celebrities by acquiring their illnesses, Brandon Cronenberg’s début feature practically invites comparisons with his father’s works. Familiar elements range from its preoccupations with weird science and bodily decay to the Videodrome-like conspiracy plot that imperils Antiviral’s taciturn hero, Syd (Caleb Landry Jones), a virus salesman who comes into possession of a particularly coveted bug. Though the younger Cronenberg’s relative inexperience is clear from Antiviral’s occasional lapses into inertia and incoherence, his satire greatly benefits from his willingness to follow a sicko premise to its most grotesque extremes.
