The ByTowne is now closed.

It's possible that, after the pandemic has been brought under control,
new management will take over the space and offer big-screen wonderfulness again.

The building is being maintained, with all its facilities and equipment intact,
in preparation for that hoped-for day.

Babe

FAMILY MATINÉE – All seats $6.

Poster for the classic family film BabeBabe is a smart young pig who watches as all the other pigs on his farm are trucked away, never to return. But Babe is spared the trip by Farmer Hoggett (James Cromwell) who takes him home, where he is adopted by a border collie and raised as one of her pups. Then something strange happens. Babe turns out to have natural herding abilities. Farmer Hoggett, who is nothing if not openminded, wonders if perhaps Babe could . . . nah, a pig can’t herd sheep. Right? But Babe gets advice from his dog family and eventually makes it all the way to the National Sheep Dog Trials.

Babe is a movie made with charm and wit. It never condescends and eschews the contrived melodrama of most kids’ pictures for a story that depends on the character and upbringing of the animals involved. It knows things, and teaches lessons. And it is so clever and well made that adults will find it entertaining too.
