Brittany Runs A Marathon

Winner of the Audience Award (Dramatic) at the Sundance Film Festival!

The hard-partying, happy-go-lucky Brittany seems to chuckle her way through anything. But as with many incessant jokesters, Brittany (Jillian Bell), who is barely making rent with her theatre ushering job and living in the shadow of her casually insulting roommate, uses humour to conceal her demons.

Poster for the long-distance comedy Brittany Runs A MarathonBut when she is forced to face her poor lifestyle choices during a doctor’s visit, she manages only a half-hearted retort before deciding to prioritize her health. Unable to afford a gym, Brittany decides to take it to the streets, running one city block at a time to build up her stamina. Along the way, she befriends Catherine (Michaela Watkins), a jogging obsessive, as well as fellow rookie Seth (Micah Stock), eventually persuading both to train with her for the New York Marathon.

The film grasps the complex nature of Brittany’s self-image without ignoring its dark side, never presenting Brittany as a patronizing role model for weight loss, nor a clichéd case of inner beauty. Brittany Runs a Marathon holds the Brittanys of the world dear.
