OTTAWA’S CINEMA FOR INTERNATIONAL AND INDEPENDENT MOVIES

Crazy Rich Asians

Unfortunately, Crazy Rich Asians is not available to us for our previously announced October screenings. In its stead, we will be presenting Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel, this romantic comedy’s dramatic conflict yields a hearty yet familiar fable of love triumphant. Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), a Chinese-American professor at N.Y.U., accompanies her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), an ethnic-Chinese businessman from Singapore, home for his best friend’s wedding. Only then does Rachel learn that Nick is the scion of a real estate empire, and that his mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh), expects him to return to Singapore and marry a woman from his own milieu.

Poster for the romantic comedy Crazy Rich AsiansThe clash of snobbish Old World tradition and socially fluid American individualism emerges through details of Chinese heritage (including a fierce showdown over a game of mah-jongg), but the story is a universal cinematic template. The vigorous cast enlivens the fairly conventional action, and brilliant comedic sallies by Awkwafina, as Rachel’s college friend, and Nico Santos, as Nick’s cousin, knock it for a loop.
