Avril et le monde truqué nous plonge dans une France parallèle où tout n’est pas blanc ou noir, mais gris. Imaginez que la guerre qui opposa, 1870, la Prusse à la France, n’aie pas eu lieu, faute de matériel de guerre innovant. La raison ? La disparition mystérieuse de tous les grands savants de la planète. Résultat, la technologie s’étant arrêtée au stade de la machine à vapeur, les guerres mondiales n’ont pas pu éclater. Napoléon V règne sur une France dévastée et enfumée par la combustion à outrance du charbon. Et c’est dans cette purée de pois polluée qu’Avril va tenter de retrouver ses parents, des scientifiques, accompagnée d’un chat parlant, d’un jeune malfrat, et poursuivie par un inspecteur de police tenace…

It’s 1941 in an alternative history of Europe where Napoleon V rules France and any technology since the steam engine has been suppressed. Pollution has ravaged the world to the point where vegetation is almost non-existent. A brilliant teenage girl named April (Marion Cotillard) lives on the streets of Paris as an orphan, hiding the scientific research she continues on behalf of her missing parents.
She goes on a quest with her talking cat Darwin (Philippe Katerine), her grandfather (Jean Rochefort), and young police informant Julius (Marc-André Grondin) to search for her parents 10 years after they narrowly escaped capture by the authorities. Scientists and inventors of all sorts have been going missing, spurring conspiracy theories and adventure. An animated film inspired by the work of French comic book artist Jacques Tardi.
