J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso), a former Marine from southern Ohio and current Yale Law student, is on the verge of landing his dream job when a family crisis forces him to return home – a place he’s tried hard to forget. J.D. must navigate the complex dynamics of his Appalachian family, including his volatile relationship with his mother Bev (Amy Adams), who’s struggling with addiction. Fueled by memories of his grandmother Mamaw (Glenn Close), the resilient and whip-smart woman who raised him, J.D. tries to come to terms with his family’s indelible imprint on his life.

Poster for the film of J.D. Vance's Hillbilly ElegyDirected by Ron Howard and based on J.D. Vance’s powerful memoir of the same name, a #1 New York Times Bestseller, Hillbilly Elegy offers a window into one family’s personal journey of survival and triumph.

Howard explains why he made this film:  “I love family dramas, true-life stories. But I’ve never done one like this that dealt with characters from rural America, and that’s my family’s background. I grew up in California, but my parents are from the Midwest. I felt like I connected with these characters, with this family’s journey. And I related to the young man discovering himself, understanding all the strengths he’s inherited but also overcoming some of the baggage.”

Glenn Close and Amy Adams in Hillbilly Elegy“I hope audiences will connect with this story and understand what it is to grasp everything that makes you who you are, good and bad. That’s the journey.”
