The lights will come on again!

The ByTowne is now closed. But there's good news!

After the pandemic has been brought under control,
new management will take over the space and the ByTowne will re-open.

It may take a while for pandemic restrictions to be eased enough
that a feasible number of patrons can be allowed to watch a movie again,
but the new owners are working towards that day.

Kandahar Journals

Presented by the Lost Dominion Screening Collective. Writer Murray Brewster will introduce the film and director/subject Louie Palu will participate in a post-film Q&A!

Kandahar Journals is the story of photojournalist Louie Palu, who reflects on the events behind his psychological transformation after covering frontline combat in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Poster art for Kandahar JournalsThe film follows Louie’s journey covering the war in Kandahar from 2006 to 2010, and its aftermath. The narrative spine of the story is built around Louie’s personal journals, pivoting from the chaos and experiential side of the war (using combat footage shot by Louie himself) to the banality of everyday life back home in Canada (directed by Devin Gallagher).

In his nearly five years ‘on the ground’, Louie meets soldiers and civilians, and is witness to violence and trauma. Over time, Louie is transformed by the increasing death and destruction. The longer he covers the war, the more he recognizes the disconnection between the public back home and himself. In the end, he must come to terms with the impossibility of photography ever conveying the reality of war, because it is a such a deeply personal experience.

This film includes footage of combat, physical injury, and death. Some viewers may find this material disturbing and unsuitable for children.
