Now, Voyager

Must-See Cinema! Classic melodrama starring Bette Davis

Now, Voyager remains a highly narcotic, swoon-inducing romance about how true love gets hindered by social conventions, with a moralistic tale of female self-empowerment thrown in to boot.

Poster for the romantic classis Now, VoyagerBoston heiress Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis) is a walking disaster of neuroses. Enter kindly psychiatrist Dr. Jasquith (Claude Rains), who completely transforms Charlotte’s life and encourages her to take a cruise to Rio. While on the cruise, she meets debonair architect Jerry (Paul Henreid). Charlotte gradually realizes that she’s an interesting person, and that an interesting guy is into her. Naturally, the lovers are thwarted because Jerry is trapped in an unhappy marriage and struggling with a daughter who’s as crazed and unhappy as the old Charlotte.

In true Old Hollywood fashion, the final scene ties it all together neatly and elegantly. And you will never forget Charlotte’s rapturous moment of awareness: “Don’t ask for the moon. We have the stars.”
