OTTAWA’S CINEMA FOR INTERNATIONAL AND INDEPENDENT MOVIES

Revolution Selfie

Presented by The Ontario Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines and Diffusion Multi-Monde.

Poster for the Philippines-set documentary Revolution SelfieRevolution Selfie: The Red Battalion is a film about the peasant revolution in the Philippine countryside. Filmmaker and former lawyer Steven De Castro sets out on a mission to meet face-to-face with the armed revolutionaries of the New People’s Army (NPA) dubbed a ‘foreign terrorist organization’ by the CIA. He draws us in to the adventure using a mock video game and a GoPro camera.

The award-winning documentary combines humour, first-person discovery of conditions in the Philippines that might drive people to join a guerilla army, and a look at what life is like for the (mostly) young fighters who are part of it. Revolution Selfie expands the horizons of documentary storytelling while broadening our understanding about the lesser-known fronts in the global ‘War on Terror.’
