Thank You, Ottawa!

The ByTowne is now closed.

It's possible that, after the pandemic has been brought under control,
new management will take over the space and offer big-screen wonderfulness again.

The building is being maintained, with all its facilities and equipment intact,
in preparation for that hoped-for day.

Royal Shakespeare Company – As You Like It

From the Royal Shakespeare Company stage to our screen!

Logo for the Royal Shakespeare CompanyThe Royal Shakespeare Company, of Stratford, England, delights with a boistrous production of the Bard’s chaotic comedy.

Duke Senior has been banned from the court by his brother, Duke Frederick. He takes refuge in the Forest of Arden. Rosalind, his daughter, remains at court as a companion to her cousin Celia.

Orlando, the youngest son of Sir Rowland de Bois, has been kept in poverty by his brother Oliver since their father’s death. Orlando decides to wrestle for his fortune at Frederick’s court, where he sees Rosalind and falls in love.

When Rosalind is suddenly banished by her uncle, she goes to the Forest to find her father, taking Celia and Touchstone, the Fool, with her. For safety, the women disguise themselves – Rosalind as a boy, Ganymede, and Celia as his sister Aliena.

Poster for the Royal Shakespeare production of As You Like ItHearing of a plot by his brother to kill him, Orlando also flees to the forest. Posting love lyrics through the forest, Orlando encounters Rosalind disguised as Ganymede. She challenges his lovesick state and suggests that he should prove his love by wooing Ganymede as if he were Rosalind.

Elsewhere in the forest, love blossoms: the shepherdess Silvia suffers unrequited love for Phoebe, who has fallen for Ganymede, while Touchstone is pursuing the goatherd Audrey. Oliver, sent into the Forest to hunt down Orlando, has his life saved by his brother, and becomes filled with remorse for his past behaviour. Orlando is so frustrated by the pain of his love for Rosalind, that Ganymede promises to conjure up the real Rosalind...
