The Luck of Ginger Coffey is a compelling drama a high-spirited Irish immigrant trying to make a living in Montreal in the early 1960s. Based on author Brian Moore’s novel, which won the Governor General’s Award, the film stars legendary actor Robert Shaw (Jaws, A Man For All Seasons) in an energetic performance as Ginger Coffey, a man bent on improving his station in life in a Canada he regards as the land of endless opportunity and utopian dreams. He soon discovers that his Canadian dreamland is not as welcoming as he imagined. Shaw’s real-life spouse Mary Ure co-stars as Coffey’s wife. By turns tough and tender, comic and tragic, this impressive drama captured the Canadian Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1965.

This is the second feature-length drama (after 1963’s Amanita Pestilens) produced by the legendary Ottawa film producer, F.R. ‘Budge’ Crawley.  By the 1960s his production company, Crawley Films, was the largest independent production company in Canada, producing everything from television shows to commercials to documentaries to animation and training films.
