The Sisters Brothers

Make a killing. Make a living.

Fresh from the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals, The Sisters Brothers stars Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed in a picaresque adventure of two brothers on a mission.

Poster for the alternative western The Sisters BrothersIn the 1850s, Eli and Charlie Sisters (John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix) are hired as hitmen by the enigmatic ‘Commodore’. Their target? The gold prospector Hermann Kermit Warm (Riz Ahmed). The problem? Well, there are a lot of them: plenty of dust-ups in taverns, the (very) long trail from Oregon City to San Francisco (much of it through the desert), and, yikes, Eli’s creeping doubt about the longevity of their careers as hired guns (his brother has no such worries). Oh, and once they catch up to Warm? He makes them an offer with which the Commodore cannot compete.

Adapting Patrick deWitt’s popular novel, Jacques Audiard (Dheepan) and his co-writer bring to the screen a colourful cast of characters (most of them liars, cheaters, and ne’er-do-wells) on a violent, and often very funny, odyssey through the criminal underbelly of the Gold Rush era.
