Thank You, Ottawa!

The ByTowne is now closed.

It's possible that, after the pandemic has been brought under control,
new management will take over the space and offer big-screen wonderfulness again.

The building is being maintained, with all its facilities and equipment intact,
in preparation for that hoped-for day.

Welsh Film Festival – Y Syrcas

(The Circus)

Part of the Welsh Film Festival, presented by the Ottawa Welsh Society!

Sometime around the midpoint of the 19th century, a travelling circus visits Tregaron in Ceredigion, a village steeped in superstition and stifled by religious strictures. The circus offers much more than entertainment for Sara (Saran Morgan), a young girl trapped by the rigid rules of her widowed father.

Poster for the Welsh film Y SyrcasDirector Kevin Allen (Twin Town) skilfully tells this heart-warming and often funny coming-of-age tale, and expands his perspective to include the town’s relationship with the troupe’s exotic characters – and its star attraction, an elephant named Jwmbi. According to local legend, Jwmbi died in Tregaron and was laid to rest behind the town’s Talbot Hotel in 1848.

Part of the Welsh Film Festival, playing four Tuesdays in March.
