When filmmaker Hannah (Olivia Colman) takes her trans nonbinary teen Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) to Amsterdam to visit their gay grandfather “Jimpa” (John Lithgow), the trip becomes a profound family reckoning. As Frances dreams of staying abroad, Hannah must confront her own parenting beliefs and family myths. Meanwhile, Jimpa faces the realities of aging in a generation that never expected to grow old, and Frances learns that even heroes are human. Inspired by her own queer family, director Sophie Hyde (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) tells her most personal story yet — a tender, funny, and deeply empathetic celebration of love, identity, and connection across generations.
Jimpa is screening as part of this year’s International Film Festival of Ottawa. Before the feature film, enjoy Canadian short film Same Time Next Year (dir. Anushay Sheikh).
