“How much is 35,000 dollars times three? 105,000 dollars? I’ll bet you 105,000 dollars that you go to sleep before I do.”
Fred C. Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) and Bob Curtin (Tim Holt), both down on their luck in Tampico, Mexico in 1925, meet up with a grizzled prospector named Howard (Walter Huston) and decide to join him in search of gold in the wilds of central Mexico. Through enormous difficulties, they eventually succeed in finding gold, but bandits, the elements and, most especially, greed threaten to turn their success into disaster.
Winner of three Oscars, including Best Director and Best Screenplay for John Huston, this atmospheric tale of destructive avarice has influenced filmmakers from Steven Spielberg to Paul Thomas Anderson, and remains a powerful cinematic experience made to be enjoyed on the big screen.
