The lights will come on again!

The ByTowne is now closed. But there's good news!

After the pandemic has been brought under control,
new management will take over the space and the ByTowne will re-open.

It may take a while for pandemic restrictions to be eased enough
that a feasible number of patrons can be allowed to watch a movie again,
but the new owners are working towards that day.

We Owe You

Vanessa with membershipThe ByTowne is closing
on December 31st, 2020.

We owe all our customers a big "thank you", for years of cinematic loyalty.
But we owe some customers more than that.

Voucher refunds

Vouchers are the pink "Admit One Member" and blue "Admit One Non-Member" cards that we've been selling for years. Some people bought them as Gift Certificates, and some bought them to save time at the box office when they attended on busy nights.

Admit One Member VoucherIf you have some Vouchers, you've pre-paid for movies that we won't be able to offer you after December 31st. There are two ways for you to get your money back:

• Bring your Vouchers to the cinema any time that we're open for movies, between now and Dec. 31st. We'll exchange them for cash.

• Mail your unused Vouchers to us at ByTowne Cinema, 325 Rideau St., Ottawa K1N 5Y4. We'll do the math and send an e-transfer to an email address you provide.

Wait! What's that about "doing the math"?

Vouchers that were purchased before July 24, 2020 will be refunded at their cost
($8.00 each for pink Member Vouchers, $12 each for blue Non-Member Vouchers).

Vouchers purchased after July 24 are worth $9.50 each (pink) and $13.50 each (blue).
And don't worry, you don't have to remember when you purchased them. From the serial number on the card, we can tell when it was sold.

Membership refunds

Membership cardWe totally understand that when you bought a ByTowne Membership, you expected it to be valid for a full year from purchase. We don't want anyone to lose money because they got less value from their Membership than it cost them to purchase. But the arithmetic isn't easy, so we want to ask you one important question before we get into the numbers.

Q: Since buying your current Membership, did you use it to save $4 on more than 3 movies
(or more than 1 movie, in the case of a Student/Senior Membership)?

If YES, Membership saved you more than you spent on it.
All you need to do now is use it again before Dec. 31st,
to enjoy its awesome value as many times as possible.

If NO, work with us through the following steps:

• Start with the amount you paid for the Membership. For regular Memberships, price was $12 before July 2020 and $15 after. Senior/Student Memberships were $6 before July and $7.50 afterwards.

• From the amount you paid, subtract $4. This is the amount you saved on the very same day that you bought it.
  - Maximum refund for a Regular Membership is therefore $11.00
  - Maximum refund for a Senior/Student Membership is $3.50

Refunds for older Memberships will be less. Keep calculating:

• Work out how many months of usefulness your card still would have. This is also not as easy as it sounds. We extended validity of Memberships because of our earlier shutdowns, so:
     - Add FIVE months to expiry dates of March 2021 and earlier.
     - Add ONE month to expiry dates of July, August, September or October 2021.
When you've worked out the extended expiry, count the months of remaining validity from January 2021.
Example: a card stamped with "February 2021" would be extended to July 2021. Because we close after December, that card has lost 7 months of validity.

• Plug your numbers into the following formula:
([Amount you paid - $4] ÷ 12) x Number of months of lost validity

• At this point, it's useful to have a smartphone. Take a photo of your Membership Card (or Cards, if you're applying for a couple or family) and email it with your requested refund to

• We will send an e-transfer back to your email address within 3 business days.

One Last Thing... (totally optional)

The ByTowne should not keep any money that you're entitled to. But if you don't need the money very badly, consider donating your refund to the ByTowne staff.

We've set up a Staff Appreciation Fund that will be equitably shared among the 15 ByTowne employees who kept you entertained -- and safe -- during the pandemic.

To donate your refund, send us your vouchers by mail (see address above) or email a photo of your Membership to Include a note that we should put the money in the Staff Appreciation Fund. No math required! We'll work out the amount.

And if you want to donate more than the value of your refund, send an e-transfer to Notes of appreciation will also be forwarded to the staff.
