A documentary film that tells an extraordinary story about a mother and daughter’s escape from war-torn Vietnam during the Fall of Saigon in April 1975. Born on a sinking ship after escaping the Communist North Vietnamese invasion, Chieu Anh (Shining Light in English) and her mother, Mui Nguyen Bui, are rescued at sea by a Danish freighter before being hoisted from the deck of the ship by a RAF helicopter to a refugee camp in Hong Kong. Their harrowing journey to the camp in Hong Kong leads them to a young Canadian immigration official on her first assignment overseas, who facilitates their immigration to Canada. 50 years later, they meet up with the helicopter crewman and the Canadian immigration officer in Montreal, the city that welcomed them, to reconstruct how it happened and who they’ve become today. Anh calls it “bringing together all the pieces of her survival puzzle”.
