Midsommar

Let the festivities begin

The latest film  from Hereditary director Ari Aster, Midsommar is a horror film with a very high I.Q. and a degree in anthropology.

Poster for the sunlit horror film MidsommarThe film begins in the United States, where something unspeakable happens to the family of Dani (Florence Pugh, Lady MacBeth), the film’s troubled heroine. Dani’s boyfriend, notably named Christian (Jack Reynor), is advised by his male friends to dump the high-maintenance girlfriend. These friends include fellow Ph.D. candidate Josh (William Jackson Harper), jokester academic Mark (Will Poulter, Detroit) and Pelle (Vilhelm Blomgren), a tall, bearded Swede, who grew up on a rural commune, to which he invites his American buddies and Dani to attend a festival celebrated every 90 years. Redrum, did I hear someone say? I and the screening audience giggled nervously at some rough patches. But when the devil figuratively comes, you are reminded of the power Aster is capable of conjuring up and, believe me, no one will laugh.
